IPL – Indian Premier League 2012
Come April, and the whole world seems to be in a cricketing mood. Yes, we are speaking about IPL (Indian Premier League). Even Bollywood avoids releasing movies during the month of April and May, as the whole of India will be keener on watching IPL matches than watch Hindi movies.
IPL is considered to be the new trend of the entertainment industry. Let us give you a brief description of what IPL is all about. IPL is a 20 over cricket match and consists of 9 teams in total. This is a high voltage run scoring game and the team that score more than 180 runs in the allotted 20 over’s have a better edge of winning a match. But, that is not always the case. There have been matches where teams have even chased 200 plus runs and won a match.
Ad makers across the globe see the IPL season as the deciding time for the success of their company. The whole of India re-schedules their trips, weddings etc. to accommodate themselves watch the match. This is considered to be one of the most awaited tournaments every year and is watched by billions of cricket enthusiasts worldwide, out of which 70% belong to India and Pakistan alone. This is an icing on the cake for all cricket lovers and a big, very big business for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
In this form of cricket, the players are bought by the owners of the 9 teams through auction. For IPL5, Ravindra Jadeja was purchased by team Chennai Super Kings for the highest auction amount of USD. 2,100,000.00. Most of the players playing in IPL make money which is more than what they make playing First Class International Cricket all through the year. This year for IPL-5, the first match began in April 4th, 2012 between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. There are 72 games in total, the finals which will take place on May 27th. Chennai Super Kings won the IPL twice till date. The caption of the team is Mahendra Singh Dhoni or MS Dhoni as he is famously known as. He was the one, who captioned the world cup winning team INDIA in the year April, 2011.
The best part of the IPL is that each team is allowed to hire maximum of 4 international players. Lasith Malinga from Srilanka representing team Mumbai Indians has always been the highest wicket taker. Similarly, Muttiah Muralitharan and Tillakaratne Dilshan have been taken by team Royal Challengers, Bangalore while Kumar Sangakkara captains team Deccan Chargers. Not only players from Srilanka but also players from Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa all play for different teams. This opens a platform for all international players a sense of unity and trust with their team mates. In a particular team, there can be international players from Australia, England, New Zealand, South Africa play alongside each other. There are also cheerleaders from different countries who are hired by the team owners to cheer their teams whenever their team batsman hits a four or a six or their bowlers takes a wicket. By all means IPL is here to stay for a long period of time.
